well i think it was a bit of both really , he wanted her to stay away because he knew it was wrong to be in love with her and that she probabley wouldn't feel the same way , so the song was more like him saying "you know i want you , but if you don't want me stay away so i don't have to hurt every time i see you"

I think the episode showed pretty clearly that whatever a person sang was what they were really feeling. I mean, obviously, he wanted to be with her more than anything, but since he knew that was impossible, he needed her to stop coming back and haunting him. He couldn't get over her as long as she hung around him all the time.
