I'm normally disappointed at first, but like the movie more later.

I think films are rarely as good as the books, but even then, the movies can be wonderful! For example, I love the Pride and Prejudice adaptations, but the book will always be my favorite.

Sometimes, like in the case with LOTR, the movie had been great. Not like the book, but it was still good, then there are complete screw up's like Queen of the Damned. That movie was horrible, but the book was fantastic. Sometimes the movies can be good and sometimes they can just flat out suck.

I rarely come upon an adaptation that's anywhere near the quality of the book, but I think LOTR and The Princess Bride is as close as any movie can ever get.

I was not disapointed in LOTR, but I was disapointed in A Seris of Unfortunate Events...

There are really some beautiful movies based on a book.

It depends. I was disappointed of Ella Enchanted, Harry Potter 3-4, the Black Cauldron, and anime adaptations of Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket (manga is always better).
There are cases where i like the film adaptations better than the books such as The Devil wears Prada (my sister said movie was better than book) and every fairy or folk tale that Disney covered. I also thought Disney's takes on Pinnochio and Les Miserables were more enjoyable than the book versions.
