Louis CK shares writing, directing and "created by" credits on this promising new series with his smoky-voiced sidekick, Pamela Adlon. And as with Louis on his own show and Aziz Ansari in "Master of None," Adlon's character, Sam, seems like a less prosperous, more precarious version of herselfa onetime teenage sitcom star, now a divorced voice actress struggling to support three young daughters.
The riffs on LA affluenza, though we've seen plenty of these on shows like "Girlfriend's Guide
" and "Californication," are still sharp and original (a scene where Sam chews out her overworked girlfriend's useless stoner boyfriend seems especially heartfelt). The industry insider stuff's consistently funny and convincing tooI treasure the look on Sam's face when, in full makeup as some sort of Klingonoid alien temptress, she's told her scene's been cut and her services won't be required. Adlon plays pretty much the same sardonic middle-aged-sexy tomboy type that she did in "Louie" and "Californication," and that's just fine with me.
So far, scripts have been consistently strongstraddling the same thin line between low-key comedy and slightly depressive realism as "Louie" was wont to doand the supporting cast's very good, especially Mikey Madison and Hannah Alligood as Sam's older daughters, a high-school kid who's already regretting her misspent youth ("trying to get high and having dramas with my friends") and a preteen Rachel Maddowlookalike, respectively. English character actress Celia Imrie is entertaining as Sam's mother, though it doesn't seem likely that the two of them could possibly share a single strand of DNA
Good show!
