"I wouldn't pee on her if she was on fire" Bette Davis
Bette Davis was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on April 5th 1908. Davis' mother said she demanded attention since the day she was born. Her parents divorced at an early age and she and her sister were raised by their mother. She was denied admittance to the Manhattan Civic Repertory. They consider Davis to be boisterous. She graduated from John Murrary Anderson's Dramatic School where they thought of her as the "star" student. After graduation, Davis appeared in many off broadway plays. In 1930 she was hired by Universal. A representive went to greet her at the train station when she arrived in Hollywood, but returned empty handed because he didn't see anyone with movie star looks. After 6 small films Universal did not renew her contract. She set off for broadway when Warner Brothers called with a seven year contract. Her first movie with Warner Brothers was "The Man Who Played God" landed her star status. She was the first Warner Brothers actress to win an academy award. In her career she was nominated for 11 oscars and won 2. The one role she always wanted but was not cast for was Scarlet O'Hara. Warners wouldn't let her play the role unless they casted David Selznick for Rhett Butler. She tried for years to break contract with Warners. She felt like they held her back from oscar worthy nominations. Davis had many flings on set and off. She was rumored to have many affairs. She was married four times and divorved three. She had a on going fued with actress Joan Crawford. During the making of "What Happend To Baby Jane?", Davis had a Coca-Cola machine installed on set. She did this becasue Crawford was the widow of CEO of Pepsi. Crawford got her revenge by putting weights in her pockets during scences Davis had to pull her across the floor. Davis said many nasty and unlady like things about Crawford. Some insults she said are "I wouldn't piss on her if she was on fire" and "She slept with every male star in MGM except for Lassie". Miss Bette Davis was unstoppable at one point in time. Her boisterous self centered personality made her a star. For some reason her life reminds me of her character from All About Eve. Davis died on October 6, 1989 from complications of breast cancer. Her tombstone reads "She did it the hard way." You got to love Miss Davis.
