Mark Twain's classic The Prince and the Pauper gets a glamorous modern makeover in the new DVD release from Universal Studios, Barbie: The Princess & the Popstar. While Twain contrasted two opposites – a prince, which everyone would want to be, and a pauper, which was not so attractive – Universal's two heroines both live a life that every young girl thinks she wants. But glamour isn't necessarily all it seems to be. As KIDS FIRST! youth film critic Cheyenne Nguyen, age 8, observes in her review, below, "There are always things that you would like to change, but accepting who you are will make you a happy person." Viewing the film also may make you a happy person. "The dance moves are amazing and make me want to stand up and dance along with the movie," says 7-year- old KIDS FIRST! youth film critic Morgan Bertsch, describing the music and singing as "fun and upbeat." The story follows two girls, Tori and Keira. Tori is the princess who wishes she was a popstar and Keira is the popstar longing to be a princess. Interesting fact: Did you know that the original author of The Prince and the Pauper is Mark Twain of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn fame? Whoo — say that five times fast! The original story was published in 1881.

Tori, the princess, is the classic blonde Barbie who is bored of her royal life. Keira, the popstar, is the brunette Barbie who dreams of being a princess. When the two of them meet, they magically trade places. But it's not all that it appears, as the pop star's manager, Crider, has plans to steal the spotlight from Keira. The girls have to figure out a way to stop his evil plot and never forget the show must go on.

I've always been a big fan of the Barbie franchise and I love what they have done in this movie. The music and singing is fun and upbeat, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." They have many different songs. I loved learning to sing the words. The dance moves are amazing and make me want to stand up and dance along with the movie. The live animation and the great set designs make me feel like I was really at a live concert.

If given the choice I would choose to be the Barbie Pop star. Whoops, sorry — I'd prefer to be Morgan because you learn in this story that it's best to be who you are. Hmm, Morgan the Pretty Princess Pop Star sounds kind of fun, though!

My favorite part of the movie is when she finds a crystal diamond gardenia. Wait till you see what it can do. The dogs are the cutest. Although they can talk I would like to hear more of what they have to say. I love all the different hair colors and styles. The dresses are incredible and amazing. I wish I could twirl and just change clothes like Barbie or at least borrow that magic microphone for the day. I also love all the glitter and sparkles. No Barbie movie is complete until the glitter sparkle ending.

The ages for this movie are 4 and up or anybody who's a fan of Barbie. This is a must-own for your collection. I give it five twinkling stars.

This DVD is scheduled to be available September 2012 in celebration of Universal's 100th anniversary. Thank You Universal for all your great movies!

This movie is full of great songs and dance. Princess Tori is a big fan of Popstar Keira. They finally meet at the Princess Castle and hit it off right away. They start talking and the princess wishes to be a popstar and the popstar wishes to be the princess for a day. Then they realized they look so much alike and try on each other clothes and pretend to each other.

Princess Tori and Keira are so much alike that they can fool a lot of people around them. Except for Princess Tori's two younger sisters; they knew right away it wasn't their sister. Tori and Keira share many secrets. One of the secrets is overheard by Keira's evil manager. This is when all bad things start to happen. They must overcome a lot of obstacles in the process of getting their lives back.

The awesome songs and dances in this movie are put together like magic. All the songs are well-known songs and the dance moves so cool. It makes me want to get up and dance to all the songs. The cartoon quality is very clear, it's like watching real-life people dancing. The details to the hair and make-up on each character are so real. Great storyline; most little girls dream of being a princess or a popstar.

This really shows the daily routine of a princess and a popstar. Only a small portion of their daily lives are good to have, the rest of their daily routines are hard work. It's not what most people would want for their lives.

My favorite character is Princess Tori's dog, Vanessa. She is so wise and cute.

The message of this movie is be happy with what you are. There are always things that you would like to change, but accepting who you are will make you a happy person.

I rank this movie five out of five stars. I give this an age range of 3 to 10.

MelodyLaurel This movie produced so many mixed reviews lol. Most older fans hated it, but little kids loved it, which I guess is a good thing because the franchise is aimed at them anyway. I really should start lowering my expectations for the next movies to zero, because there's no way they can live up to my already-painfully-low expectations.

MelodyLaurel That's a matter of personal opinion, and the "critic" is only 8. They might not have a wonderfully keen eye for details like you do, BarbieRosella.

manu962 Well, to say the truth I agree with most of what she says. This makes even me realize the positive side of PaP. Even that I can't forget that the plot of the movie is too short and not as interesting as the plots for other Barbie Movie. Well the movie did have a message. Maybe it isn't a real message for us but there are many kids who want to change their lives. And the movie learns then they they're good for who they are. I like that she said "Keira is the brunette Barbie" since many kids think she is Teresa. But she's totally wrong when she said "No Barbie movie is complete until the glitter sparkle ending." Seriously? Then to her the older movies aren't complete. But I guess that's what kids nowadays want. Glitter and Sparkle! And we teenagers should watch Barbie Movies in the way kids want. And I don't blame Mattel for that. They had to make the movie in the way kids like or else they wouldn't watch that. But I'll never understand why little girl nowadays don't like the magic, animation and awesome plot the classic movies had.

MajorAbbey To be honest, I feel like Vi and MelodyLaurel hit the nail on the head with this one. I've said my thoughts about PaP many times, so I don't really want to repeat them. To put it bluntly, I feel like the negative things about it outweigh the positive things (that doesn't mean the positive aspects don't exist, of course). So, obviously, I can't say I agree with most of these reviews. The "glitter sparkle ending"part, for instance? Yeah, I don't think so. (That said, the part about Crider "planning to steal the spotlight" made me smile. Probably because, in my eyes at least, he's done that already simply by being one of the most interesting characters in the movie.) I can't say I understand why little girls nowadays apparently need to have glitter and sparkles in their BMs. But, then again, it could just be because A. I'm too old and B. I clearly have different tastes. The kids writing these reviews are at least a decade younger than I am. And, of course, I've never been one for glitter and pretty dresses. After all, I'm the one who sympathizes with Duchess Amelia and wishes Mattel would actually acknowledge the older characters' existence. So the same things that appeal to me probably won't appeal to them, and they ARE Mattel's target audience. Can't say I'm happy about it, but that's the way things are.

sparkletoes hmm...the positive side of PaP? Seriously I couldn't think of a positive side of the movie!!!! Yes I agree that the songs and the dances and the animation was good and realistic...and the magic and sparkle blah blah blah....but this is a BARBIE movie we are talking about! Seriously this movie had no material or deep meaning ..or innocence that makes a barbie movie the best! And a lesson? No way! It actually teaches BAD manners to girls!!! Putting a spoon on your nose...don't listen to grown ups and have negative thoughts about them...turn their picture into a DONKEY!! which is seriously rude if you think about it logically!! I can't believe why some people like these kinds of movies!!! And they are encouraging mattel to make MORE like this....hmm...maybe the time is coming near!!! The time when I QUIT watching barbie movies!!!

MajorAbbey ^Well, I know I said I wouldn't repeat myself, but it's good to know I'm not the only one who had a problem with that aspect of the movie. Makes me worry a bit about PS, if I'm honest.

manu962 ^ I have to agree about that. I always felt sad for Duchess Amelia. That made me think Tori was a bit selfish which is probably one of the reasons that I dislike her a bit, of course there are things that I dislike about Keira too. They both have a bit of selfish personality. Even Meredith was more sensitive than Tori when she said "I hope we didn't hurt her feelings" even that to me that's not a proper question. Of course they hurt her feelings. And what did Tori say "She doesn't get her feelings...". I guess Tori is the one who doesn't get someone else's feelings. How could Mattel think Tori and Keira are good role models? Well Eden wasn't a good role model for girls either but at least she had a reason. She had an evil aunt who taught her to be mean while Tori had an aunt who tried to teach her to be responsible. Still I can't say I didn't love the movie.

MajorAbbey There's nothing wrong with loving a movie, even if you have problems with it. There are some movies that I love, and I wouldn't say they're perfect. :) I would actually say Keira's less selfish than Tori. I mean, all she really wanted was a day off, which was understandable given her work schedule. I certainly found her easier to sympathize with than Tori, which wasn't something I was expecting when I saw the movie. I think the real problem I had with this is not so much that Tori behaved that way - that's part of her character, and no character should be a total saint - but the fact that the movie seemed to condone it. You mentioned Eden, but even though she wasn't a good role model, at least it was made clear that her behavior wasn't okay. The people around her only put up with it because their jobs were on the line (and, in Catherine's case, because they knew she could be better than that). We didn't really get that with Tori. She did say that she loved Amelia, and that was good, but it doesn't really justify the way Amelia was treated, story-wise at least. Mattel seemed to be trying to make her out to be the "Madame Karp" of the story (if we're going to make P&P comparisons, which a lot of people tend to do with this movie); except it doesn't work, because Madame Karp actually WAS a horrible person. There was actually evidence in the story to back that up. Literally all Amelia did was enforce rules. That doesn't make someone horrible. Being stuck in one's ways isn't a crime, especially if it's not hurting anyone. (It has literally dawned on me as I'm typing this that I can see a lot of similarities between Amelia and myself, especially in comparison to the newer/younger BMs/fans. No wonder I keep defending her.)

PrinceNicholes I agree with BarbieRosella. The details of the hair on each character cannot be so real. It'll take a lot of time even for expert 3D animators to make the hair so real.

manu962 ^ I think if they can if they at least try. I just watched Tangled yesterday and hell every single tooth and hair is made perfectly. Why can't Mattel do that for Barbie Movies? Even from the Swan Princess Christmas (if anybody here watched it) Odette's hair are drawn very good. It's time from Barbie Movies to have a proper animation. What are they waiting for? I don't want to see more onetooth and frozen hair.

MJsValentine The production costs of Tangled are estimated around $260 million while production time lasted for six years. Therefore the animation runs a lot more fluid and appears to be more 'flawless' and realistic. This applies to most of the Disney film releases and particularly in Tangled's case a tremendous amount of money and time was invested in the animation of the characters' hair. Besides the film was released in theatres worldwide, with the aim of attracting a larger audience. Barbie movies, on the other hand, are most of the time direct-to-video releases (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Production costs are significantly lower and the production time is shorter. The primary purpose of the movies is to promote Mattel's special doll lines. The target demographic of the movies are young girls and they are at the same time Mattel's potential costumers. I'm not saying that older people do not buy the dolls, but from a business perspective; young girls draw in a lot more money and that's sadly the only thing which counts nowadays. It's up to Mattel whether or whether not they want to turn the Barbie movie franchise into a major motion production. However, at the moment the BMs are doing a great job at the task they've been given as little girls love the movies and dolls. Oh and Tangled generated most of its profits from box office sales, something which Mattel doesn't really pay attention to.

manu962 ^ You're right. It's just that sometimes I forget Barbie Movies are made more for the merchandise. Still even if it's so Barbie Movies keeps having their own awesome character and meaningful quotes. There are actually some parts that I like more in Barbie movies than Disney ones. Barbie's personality is much better Snow White's, Aurora's and Ariel's for me and Barbie Movies find a better way of defeating villains. I don't really like how Disney villains are defeated and somehow in almost every movie before the get defeated there is always dark, rain and thunders that makes it less special. Lolz I think I wrote quite long. BTW I just wish Mattel takes the movie making more seriously and notice that it doesn't just make their toys famous.

MajorAbbey I actually think it's a good thing that you're able to forget it, because it means it's not the sole focus of the movie. As xTinkerbellx said at one point, they could just as easily have been feature-length toy commercials, but they're not. That's not a bad thing. (That said, there were parts of PaP that felt like they were toy commercials, but that wasn't a problem with the movie as a whole.) The thing is, I wish Mattel would realise this for themselves. I don't think that they see their movies as anything more than a promotional tool, especially nowadays.

manu962 ^ Yes,you're right. As long as the movies are interesting it doesn't matter for what they are made. But it can be clearly seen that Mattel are all into toys. I mean the dolls come earlier than even the movie plot. In PCS's case the dolls came earlier than the final plot so they didn't make Isla's doll.

MajorAbbey And it may have happened again with PS (unless I guess correctly and one of those dolls was Hailey? I'm not sure). I have to say, that's a problem I have, too (doesn't bug me anywhere near as much as the whole "let's not pay attention to the older characters because they're OLD" mentality, but still). I wonder why it is, though? Is it because the dolls tend to be released before the movies?
