Angel was a 100 + years old vampire who claimed to fall in love with a 15 years old girl's HEART when he saw her in a sexy t-shirt sucking a lollypop. However, it was such a problem for him not to have sex with her that he left her and moved to LA. Since that day these two barely interacted during the series and became strangers to each other. Spike fell in love with Buffy and he did EVERYTHING to be with her. He brought his soul back for her. Angelus didn't. No other vampire ever did it. Spike was unique. He evolved and his love for Buffy evolved. He ended up fighting by her side and dying for her when Angel wasn't even there. If Bangel was a true love it would have been Angel there with Buffy during the final battle. He'd come back and fight with the one he loved. Obviously, Angel put the world and the duty thing first. Spike always put Buffy first. And with Bangel we got "Years, if ever". With Spuffy we got "I love you". Buffy's VERY LAST WORD on the series was SPIKE. Because of the build up they got, because of what they've been through, because Spike was always by Buffy's side when Angel was not. And because even when she had her chance with Angel (in Chosen) she came to spant the night that could be her last in Spike's arms, not Angel's. Also can I point out that not James Marsters' words matter, but Joss Wheadon's the creator and he clearly said that "Spike is the man in her life right now" (his Chosen commentary) and "Buffy WAS IN LOVE with Spike when their hands clasped" and that he told Sarah and James to "play the romance. LOVE HIM WHEN YOU SAY YOU LOVE HIM, love her when you say she doesn't love her". Joss' OWN words.
