Now that Jake has fully embraced his new role in life as the leader of the Na'vi, he's able to go through lots of new, interesting changes. He and Quaritch's rivalry was already pretty heated in the first film, but things get a more lot personal and intense in the sequel. Their passionate rivalry carries the film's large number of action sequences. Adding kids to the cast can sometimes be more of a hindrance than a help. However, Jake and Neytiri's kids are a welcomed addition to the film. Their subplots lead to a lot of compelling development.

Quaritch is a very effective, intimidating villain. He's a pretty bad person, but he still has enough humanity to avoid being a one-dimensional villain. Kiri arguably has the most emotional subplot, because she's someone that accepts her adopted family as her loved ones, but she also wants to learn more about her late mother. She also stands out for her unusual connection to the ocean.
