Avatar: The Legend of Korra Question

How can Bolin be an Earthbender and Mako a firebender if they're brothers?

I'm not sure if this was ever addressed in the show (forgive me if it was), but how is this possible? I don't think I've come across another case like this anywhere in the Avatar universe.

I don't remember if they brought it up in the show but they'd have to have some Earth Kingdom blood and some Fire Nation blood. Probably their parents were fire and earth.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I just remembered that Kya was a Waterbender.
