Aang, Roku and Korra all had animal companions. Did any of the other Avatars have a 'pet'?

Taking a queue from Korra, Kuruk may have had a PolarBear Dog or something like that...

I noticed that only Roku's dragon is with him in the spirit world but not the animal companions of the other avatars. Appa is also not with Aang when he connected with Korra. Is it because Roku's dragon died with him?
