AU/Crossover couples Question

How do you come up with a crossover?

How do you decide which programmes/films etc to crossover? Most of the ones I've seen are based on a shared actor, or occasionally just 'verses which have stuff in common and would cross over well (e.g. two different fantasy/sci-fi programmes). But I've seen some pairings whose crossover I really don't get. They don't seem to have anything in common. How do you come up with those? Is it just thinking that the characters' personalities fit? Or that they look like a good couple?

yeah... I'm pretty weird so some I do on Photogenics of it but mostly I have to obsessed with the characters and actually see and interesting interaction for them in my head. usually they share a few traits physically and in their background.... I'll edit later, on a school computer

hehe still didn't edit but my first ever AU headship was Quorra (from Tron Legacy) and Loki (from marvel movies) and then i was like... WTH IS WRONG WITH YOU???!!!! i don't know... I just don't. and then I (as family) headshipped Sarah from the Labyrinth and Thranduil from the Hobbit series but one that i freaking adore is the Child like empress from the first Neverending story and Peter pan from the 200? live action movie. pretty freaking obsessed with those 2
