After work, Lilly stood outside waiting for Juliet to arrive. She glanced up and down the street, looking for any sign of the car. She sighed when she didn’t see any lights. Lilly pulled out her iPhone and started to surf the Internet. She had been researching about her biological parents. So far, she had come up with nothing. No matter how much she hacked or where she went, there was no record of them.
Headlights blinded Lilly for a second. Juliet pulled up and Lilly opened the passenger door.
“Hey girl,” Juliet said, smiling. Lilly started to get in the car when Mr. Jacobs ran out of the bakery yelling for her to wait.
“What’s wrong, Mr. J?” Lilly asked, confused.
“You forgot your wallet,” he said, winded. He handed her a small bag. She looked inside to see her wallet along with a few of her favorite treats.
“Happy early birthday, Lilly,” he smiled and walked inside. Lilly got into the car and they drove off.
“Hey, Mom,” Lilly said after awhile.
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“Can you promise me something?”
“That depends on what it is first.”
“Will you promise me that on my birthday, you will answer any questions I have truthfully?”
Juliet thought for a second. “Sure,” she said, nodding. Lilly yawned. It had been a long day and she was ready for bed. When they finally got home, Lilly trudged up to her room. She took a quick shower and brushed her teeth. She applied her daily moisturizer and waited a full minute before washing it off. She turned off the main light in her room but left the bathroom light on and the door open. Lilly hated the dark. She crawled into bed, and fell into a dreamless sleep.
Lilly jolted awake at the sound of a loud car horn. She glanced at her clock, 6:30. She sighed and started to get dressed for school. She walked downstairs and poured herself a bowl of cereal. Juliet walked into the kitchen.
“Good morning,” she said, cheerfully.
“Good morning,” Lilly replied, sleepily. “I forgot to ask you last night, what did Principal Davis say that my punishment was?”
“He didn’t. All he said was for you to come in this morning and talk to him.”
“So why were you in there for half and hour after I left yesterday?”
“He was yelling at me saying stuff like ‘Ms. Smith you need to take better care of your child’ and ‘Ms. Smith what are you teaching her at home.’” Juliet rolled her eyes. “Come on, it’s time to go.”
Lilly hopped into the passenger’s seat of the car. Juliet dropped her off at the front of the school and she went inside to talk to Principal Davis. When she got to the office, the secretary let her right in. Principal Davis was sitting behind his desk with his head in his hands. He looked up when she walked in.
“Ah, Lilly. Please, sit down.” Lilly sat down and Principal Davis leaned forward. “How are you today?”
“I’m fine,” she said, a little confused.
“That’s good. Well, I thought a lot about what you said yesterday.”
Lilly was taken aback. “You did?!”
Principal Davis nodded. “I did and I have decided that…” Lilly’s eyes grew wide in anticipation. “Both you and Zach shall serve detention for the next two days.” Her mouth dropped.
“What?” she protested.
“Yes, you need to report there before you are late and get more detention.” Principal Davis pushed the bewildered Lilly out the door and slammed it behind her. She stood there for a second, stunned, then she shook her head and walked to the detention room. She sat down in the back of the room and waited for the bell to ring. Zach walked through the door. He had two black eyes. Lilly laughed and he glared at her.
“What are you looking at, tough guy?” she asked. “Want me to break something else?”
His eyes grew wide with fear. He walked to the opposite side of the room and sulked in the corner. Lilly walked up to the teacher.
“May I please use a computer?” she asked as politely as she could.
“Why?” the teacher asked, not even looking up from the book he was reading.
“So that I can put the finishing touches on my plan to steal the Mona Lisa,” she said, her voice completely serious. The teacher looked at her horrified and she burst out laughing.
“I’m joking.” She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. “I’m trying to learn Japanese and I want to continue my online lesson.” The teacher nodded, still freaked out by what she said. Lilly grabbed a laptop and walked back to her desk. She logged on and plugged in her headphones.
It was 2:58 and the last bell was about to ring. Lilly was now fluent in Japanese. She scanned the list of languages on the site and decided that Chinese would be next. She walked to her classrooms to get the homework for the day. The teachers didn’t bother to explain it because Lilly would probably figure it out by herself.
Juliet picked her up and they rode home. Lilly walked up to her room and quickly finished her homework. She pulled out her laptop and continued her research on her parents. Juliet called her down for dinner, then she went to bed. A very uneventful day. The next day was the same. She went to detention, practiced Chinese, got her homework, rode home, researched, ate, and went to bed.
On Friday, Lilly was allowed to go to class again. She practically skipped down the hallway to her first class. She entered the science lab, just as the bell rang. Lilly decided that today she would sit right in front of the teacher, just to make him uncomfortable. Science class was uneventful. Math was her next class, then English. Both classes seemed to take forever.
Then, finally, fourth hour came. It was Lilly’s favorite class, Spanish. She loved the Spanish language. There were so many different ways of speaking it, depending on what part of the world you were in.
“Hola, Señora Rodríguez. ¿Cómo estás?” she said as she walked in the door.
“Estoy bien. ¿Cómo estás, Lilly?” She looked up and smiled.
“Estoy bien.” Lilly took her seat in the front of the class. The rest of the day past quickly, but then 7th hour came. Gym. Lilly cringed at the thought. She walked into the girls’ locker room and slowly changed clothes. She trudged into the gymnasium.
Lilly hated gym. It was one of the only things she wasn’t good at. She was very agile but when it came to athletics, she had two left feet. Lilly stood at the back of the group a scowl printed across her face. Coach Peterson walked out of her office with a basketball tucked under her arm.
“Good morning class,” she said.
“Good morning, Coach Peterson.”
“Today we will be playing basketball.” Big surprise, Lilly thought. “We will split into teams. Grace, you and Laura will be captains. You will take turns picking players for your teams. Laura, you pick first.” Laura and Grace stood in the front of the class scanning the crowd of giggling girls. Soon, Lilly was standing by herself in front of two groups. The captains were yelling at each other trying to decide which team she should be on.
“You take her!”
“I don’t want her! You take her!”
“Guess what, I can hear you,” Lilly said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. All the girls turned to look at her. “I’ll make it easy on both of you.” She stormed over to the bleachers and sat down. She crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, glaring at anyone who dared to come near. Coach Peterson walked over and sat next to her. Anger emanated from Lilly’s whole body.
“Lilly, listen…” Coach Peterson started.
“Please don’t give me the ‘Everyone’s a winner if they only try’ speech. I’ve heard it a thousand times. I’m no good at sports and I never will be, end of story.” She turned away from Coach Peterson. She heard the coach sighed and eventually walk away.
When the bell rang, Lilly changed and left the gym as fast as she possibly could. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw that Juliet was calling her.
“Hello?”
“Hey Lilly, I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be able to pick you up from school today. I got caught up at work. I know you have your clubs after school, so if you could walk home, that would be great.”
“Yeah, no problem. I’ll see you tonight.” She hung up and walked to the Language lab.
It was late and Lilly was just finishing up with the Latin club. She said goodbye to her teacher and walked outside. She was almost home when she heard someone following her. She whipped around to find Zach Harrison smiling at her. Lilly saw that she was being surrounded by three other football players.
“Why hello there, Zach,” Lilly said.
“Hello, Lilly.”
“Come back for another beating?”
“Actually, it’s the other way around. We’ve come to give you a beating.” The boys attacked from all sides. Lilly focused her energy and roundhouse kicked two of the boys. They flew across the street. Another boy ran at her and she punched him in the gut, bringing him to his knees. She walked towards Zach whose eyes were wide with fear.
“I hope that teaches you not to mess with me.” She walked away. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Zach run at her. Something silver sparkled in his hand. Lilly quickly turned around. The knife Zach was holding slit a deep gash in Lilly’s left arm. She gasped in pain. The flat of Lilly’s right hand slammed into his chest and he smashed into the ground.
“Just leave me alone!” She turned and ran towards her house. By the time she got there, her vision was starting to get blurry. She stumbled up the stairs and went into the bathroom. She cleaned off the cut, wincing in pain as soon as the water touched it. It wouldn’t stop bleeding. She sat down on her bed.
She sighed and looked down at the gash. Her eyes widened as she saw a blue spark travel across the length of the wound and sink into her skin. Hundreds of other sparks appeared and surrounded the cut. Lilly watched as the gash quickly disappeared. She extended her arm. It was as if nothing had happened. Lilly flopped onto her bed, letting the darkness overtake her.
Headlights blinded Lilly for a second. Juliet pulled up and Lilly opened the passenger door.
