Lilly opened her eyes to find the sun shining in her face. For once, she was happy about it.

“Hello, Mr. Sun. Isn’t it a beautiful day!” She jumped out of bed and quickly brushed her hair. She skipped down the stairs and into the kitchen.

Months passed and soon it was Christmas Eve. At the request of Mrs. Fowl, Elena became friends with Artemis. Mr. and Mrs. Fowl came to trust Elena enough to leave the house for long periods of time. Artemis taught Elena how to read lips so that they could communicate without the parents knowing.

Elena walked into the kitchen and froze in her tracks. It was a mess! Dishes were piled high in the sink and there was grim covering the floor, which was buried under a foot of trash.

“Might as well get to work,” Elena said. She pulled a Persian blue ribbon from around her neck and tied her hair back. She grabbed all the kitchen cleaning supplies from the closet and got to work.

First, Elena loaded all of the dishes into the dishwasher and started it. It will be done by the time I finish everything else, she thought.
