Lilly Smith awoke to find the sun shining in her eyes. She groaned and pulled the covers over her face. She did not like sunlight. It did not agree very much with her pale skin.
“Lilly, come down to breakfast.” Her mom called up the stairs. Lilly sighed and jumped out of bed. She walked over to her dresser. Lily picked up her brush and carefully combed her long black hair until it was silky smooth. She leaned forward to examine her face. She had been breaking out a lot recently. She looked into her bluish-hazel eyes and sighed. She sauntered down to the kitchen. Her mother was cooking at the stove.
“Good morning, Mom,” she said, sitting at the table. Her mother’s blonde braid whipped behind her as she turned and smiled at Lilly.
“Good morning, dear,” she placed an omelet in front of her. Lilly ate quietly for a few minutes.
“Mom,” she asked, hesitantly. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Of course you can.”
“Did you know my biological parents?” Her mother dropped the plate she was washing. It landed back in the sink, splattering water all over the tile floor.
“W-What are you talking about?” Her mom stuttered.
“Please don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. One, we look nothing alike. You have blonde hair and tan skin and I have black hair and very pale skin. Two, you are not married and I defiantly know you weren’t raped Ms. Jade Princess.”
Juliet smiled. “You are so smart, just like your father.” Lilly’s eyes widened.
“So you did know them!” she said excitedly.
Juliet shook her head. “I didn’t know them personally. I didn’t even met them officially. All I know is that your father is a genius and your mother was a police officer.” Lilly felt her heart droop. She stared at her plate.
“Oh.”
“But, don’t get depressed. It’s time for school anyway. Go on.” Juliet pushed Lilly towards the stairs. Lilly slowly pulled on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Juliet was waiting for her by the front door.
“Come on,” she gestured frantically. “I don’t want you to be late again.” They ran to the car and Lilly hoped into the driver’s seat.
“Only four more days, then I can drive myself to school.” Lilly said, rubbing the steering wheel. She slowly backed out of the drive way and drove off down the street.
At school, Lilly sat in the back of the room processing the information she had received this morning.
“Lilly!” She looked up to see her best friend, Lexie Martin running towards her. “OMG guess what?” Lilly didn’t get a chance to guess. “Molly told Stephanie who told Laura who told Jamie who told me that Zach Harrison is looking for you!”
“OMG!” Lilly yelled with pretend excitement. “I don’t care,” she crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair.
“But Zach is the hottest boy in school,” Lexie protested.
“Yeah well I really don’t care. And he probably only wants to copy my homework or something.”
Lexie rolled her eyes. “You are a strange girl, Lilly Smith.” The school day passed slowly. Afterward, Lilly was waiting for Juliet to pick her up. She wandered through the hallways, lost in her own thoughts.
“Ow!” A screamed came from around the corner. Lilly quickly ran to see what was wrong. A freshman boy sat shivering against some lockers. The boys on the football team surrounded him. Lilly marched over to the group and pushed them aside.
“What is wrong with you?” she said. Lilly walked over to the freshman and helped him up. “Come on. You’re okay. What’s your name?”
“J-James Parker.”
“Well James, why don’t you run along.” She smiled at him and he ran down the hallway. She turned to the leader of the group.
“Zach Harrison, why am I not surprised,” she said, putting her hands on her hips. “Do you get a kick out of torturing other people?”
Zach glanced around at his posy. “Oh look, it’s loner girl coming to the rescue.” The other boys laughed.
“Oh my gosh, that was the worst come back I’ve ever heard.” Lilly rolled her eyes. “Go act stupid with your meat head friends somewhere else.” She stared at Zach.
“Oh that’s rich coming from a girl with parents who don’t even care about her enough to keep her.” Lilly felt her fist make contact with Zach’s nose. He flew across the hallway and smashed into the lockers. Teachers poked their heads out from their classrooms.
Lilly glared at the other boys. “Anyone else care to join him,” her tone was menacing. All the boys shook their heads and took off down the hallway. One teacher walked up to Lilly and Zach.
“Come on,” he said. “Let’s visit the principal’s office.”
Lilly sat in a chair on one corner of the principal’s desk and Tyler sat on the opposite side. He had an ice bag on his face and he kept muttering something about football. Juliet stood behind Lilly’s chair and listened quietly while Principal Davis yelled at her.
“Your daughter has violated another student. And not just any student, our school’s star quarterback. She has broken his nose. Also, she has not respect for authority and she argues with her teachers regularly.” Lilly couldn’t take it anymore. She stood up and stared right at Principal Davis.
“I cannot believe what I’m hearing. All you care about is your stupid football team. You don’t even know why I punched or even if he deserved it. I’ll tell you why I punched him because, one, he was picking on a freshman and, two, he insulted my family. I’m tired of the football players getting special treatment. Well, I’m the president of the Spanish, French, and Latin club and I don’t get special treatment. So why don’t you straighten out your priorities and then come talk to me.” She turned to Zach. “And you, go find some manliness and quit picking on other people.” She marched out of the office.
Juliet came out of the office half and hour later. She smiled at Lilly, who had been sitting just outside and gestured for her to follow. Lilly got up and at trailed behind her adopted mother.
They rode quietly in the car the rest of the way home. They pulled into the driveway. Juliet parked the car and sighed. She turned to Lilly, who was staring out the window.
“Listen, Lilly,” Juliet started. “I just wanted to say that,” she took a deep breath. “You did a great job with that Zach kid, did you see his face. He was black and blue all over.” Lilly laughed. Juliet could always cheer her up. They went inside and sat in the kitchen talking. Lilly glanced at the clock, 4:12.
“Oh my gosh, I’m gonna be late to work!” She jumped up and grabbed her wallet. She and Juliet ran out to the car. Lilly hopped in the driver’s seat and they raced off down the road.
Lilly pulled up to the bakery and jumped out. She said a quick goodbye to Juliet and raced inside.
“Hi, Mr. Jacobs,” she yelled. “Sorry I’m late.” She grabbed her apron off the hook and quickly tied it around her waist. She walked to the kitchen and started to work.
