Hakuouki is set in the Bakumatsu (late Edo) in the 1860s. The anime features the Shinsengumi, a samurai force founded to protect the Shogunate during a time of western opening of the ports. So a time of old vs. new

It is loosely based on the actual Shinsengumi members and is a reverse harem. Also has some yokai (demons) in the anime and vampiric tendencies here and there. So not complete historic but has a lot of the real people's names and ranks, and their battles.

BTW the series are in a confusing order because the second came out before the first and are long difficult names but the (storyline) order goes:
Hakuouki Reimeiroku
Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan
Hakuouki Hakkesturoku
Hakuouki Sekkaroku

Sengoku Basara
this anime is also based on Sengoku era in the history of feudal Japan.........

all characters in this anime were real especially the one in my pic his name is Date Masemune.

Date Masamune was a regional strongman of Japan's Azuchi-Momoyama period through early Edo period. Heir to a long line of powerful daimyo in the Tōhoku region, he went on to found the modern-day city of Sendai.

Born: September 5, 1567, Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan
Died: June 27, 1636
