A few of my personal favourite anime:
(series)
Natsume Yuujinchou - a heart warming and relaxing show. The pace is a little slow, but if you persevere, I doubt you will regret it. The ending leaves some lose ends not tied up, though...
Death Note - a very clever anime. The strategies are genius and the plot is totally original, not to mention there are some great characters.
Fullmetal Alchemist - a brilliant series all round. It deserves it's popularity.
Hataraku Maou-sama - one of the funniest anime I've ever come across. It's only 13 episodes long (so far), but you get attached to the characters really quickly! The plot is interesting, too. I'm hoping they'll bring out another season, since this is another anime with some lose ends not tied up...
Yu Yu Hakusho - an exiting show that will keep you gripped (well, it kept me gripped, anyway). The fights are brilliant, the arcs are imaginative and the characters are likable. I'm sure Naruto got a lot of inspiration from this...
(films/movies)
Studio Ghibli films - if you like anime movies, I highly recommend these; they're beautiful. Kiki's Delivery Service, The Secret World of Arrietty, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Nausicaa: Valley of the Winds... they're all worth watching.
Hotarubi no Mori e - in my opinion, this is one of the most moving films in creation. I burst into tears while watching it and I don't usually cry at films... This is by the same manga writer as Natsume Yuujinchou, so if you like one, you'll probably like the other.
Wolf Children - a really sweet film, though it's quite sad in parts. A very satisfying thing to watch.
Oh heck, I should probably have given you details on the plots rather than rambling on about their advantages and disadvantages... XD Oh well. It'll be more interesting to have a surprise! :P
