I liked him a little bit in the beginning, but the further I got into the series, the more and more I despised him. There are countless reasons why. Overall, he is actually my least favorite fictional character of not just Death Note and anime, but of all time.
He is indeed a monster, especially at the end. I think it's odd how one character can be disliked so much, yet also kind of liked a bit at the same time, or at least at the beginning. I personally liked him and he remains one of my favourite characters, even though he is evil and killed off all my other favourite characters in the anime and manga, yet he is still undoubtedly evil, although his first intentions originally seemed 'good'. I think that's why I like him-he's a very complex character.
