Not so much a Jerk in the Manga, and cares for the girls in that version, in the Visual Novel, it's the player's choice to make him a jerk or take a nicer route.

~Perfect example would be their crossover with sket dance. On the sket dance side of the crossover, it was a hostile take over XD Kagura kept calling bossun different names like bossulino, bolcano and bossu nova, Gin called them sex dance, defining sket dan club as people who looks for skanks to work for a hostess club (scout man) and pretty much bashing on every mistake like when Himeko said "cock of the mill" Gintoki responded with "she said cock, a girl actually said cock!" then laughed mockingly... rude.... but that's Gintama XD
