Should I watch the Black Rock Shooter OVA first?

I'm planning on starting Black Rock Shooter, but i'm just not sure whether I should start with the OVA or the anime series.

I've heard the anime was based of the OVA, but does that mean the anime is just an alternate version of the story?

The OVA and the television series are similar in that they'd probably share the same basic, basic synopsis, but in the end, they're completely unrelated, with the exception of shared characters. I'd recommend watching the OVA first, but that's only because it physically existed first. Tbh, it doesn't really matter.
