Anime Question

So, if anyone's seen Trigun AND Badlands Rumble...

...How are they related? Is Badlands Rumble a sequel, a side story, or what? Also, is it possible to watch Badlands Rumble before finishing the entire series and still understand what's going on, without too many spoilers? Thanks in advance for your help.

It does involve a character Vash let get away but i dont think you'd have to have seen the series to watch the movie.
