It could be another secret that would take another 13 books to get to, like some clue or an unknown secret about Count Olaf, or the Baudelaire parents, but there is a fact I DO know, Lemony Snicket was madly in love with a married woman named Beatrice. With more I found Beatrice is the Baudelaire mother. She is married, and I guess she is dead, according to the Beatrice notes in the beginning of the books. When the orphans find that one of their parents may be alive, I'm guessing it was the father, even though I do not know this.

Snicket was probably planning to write more than 13 books, and introduced the sugar bowl for the readers to be intrigued and read the next book. After a few books you can tell that he got tired of writing the series, and you can tell he is rushing a bit and ended the books so suddenly by killing off Count Olaf, the main villain.
