I'm not sure why, but it always really felt more like they'd divorced. The way Max is so resentful for what seems like Goofy trying to make up for something with over-protective fathering and affection; it feels very much like the general attitudes of a divorced house. In fact it feels a LOT like what MY Dad went through. I'm not sure a death would cause this kind of friction exactly.
